Collaborative Consumption Featured @ TEDxSydney
Jump to Comments
Special thanks to Rachel Bostmann for the shout out about Swaptree.com at the TEDx Conference in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday.
Rachel has collaborated with Roo Rogers to write a book about collaborative consumption that is due out in the Fall 2010. We are very pleased that Swaptree would be featured in this book along with eBay, ZipCar and other companies focused on collaborative consumption.

Jeff,
Thanks for the post. I included Swaptree in my TED Sydney speech because I think it is a wonderful example of ‘online dating’ for all our unwanted stuff. We need more of these systems that use the internet to create an infinite marketplace to instantly match Person A have’s with Person’s C want’s (whatever they are) to stretch the usage of products and reduce waste.
I also think Swaptree is part of a movement using technology to enable trust between strangers”. In fact, technology is taking us back to old market behaviors when we use to swap and share because we mimic the face-to-face exchanges that used to take place in villages.
Its a theme I spoke about at TED. A few years ago, it would have seemed like a crazy idea for me to swap my stuff with a total stranger without any money changing hands. But yet 99% of trades of Swaptree have happened successfully. Its a brilliant illustration of the power of community policed reputation systems to motivate the right behaviors and weed out the bad. Trust and reputation are critical to make sharing and collaboration work on a scale and in ways that are convenient and appealing.

Thanksvfor your comment, mention at TED and your leadership in the area of collaborative consumption. Your views on this matter are in line with mine. It was a compelling reason to join Saaptree as CEO. There is a movement happening here. We are glad to be at ground zero. We want to change the world.
