10 Million Americans To Own Kindle

J.P. Morgan Internet Analyst Imran Khan has projected that some 10 million Americans will either own one of Amazon’s e-book readers or plan to get one within the next year according to a new report released this week.

I am a big fan of my Kindle and have posted often about this on this blog.  Although I love my Kindle, I must admit it does not monopolize my reading.  Not all books are yet available for the Kindle which is kind of frustrating.  I have also become active trading books that I have read for new ones on SwapTree.Com, which is a very cool trading site for books, cds, dvds and games.

Interesting that J.P. Morgan publishes this report amidst lots of discussion of new competitors like Sony and others coming into to the eBook market.

  • Jeff —

I just found your blog. Well done!

This month’s issue of Fast Company has an interesting article about amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the Kindle. The article talks about the potenial battle between Amazon and Apple via their iTunes store to capture the ebook market. Apple has some real advantages. Interesting reading.

  • Do you remember the surprise email that initially released the Kindle to the Amazon customer base? It was in November 2007, just before Thanksgiving. I did not see it, but it was deeply inspirational to me in forming Daily Grommet. Here’s why. A friend told me, “I got the email. I had no interest in the Kindle. It’s not my kind of thing. But I saw the Maya Angelou and Michael Lewis talking head videos about using the Kindle. They seemed real, honest, and compelling. I immediately bought a Kindle, on the spot.”

I knew he was onto something. Especially the “real, honest” part. And the idea of how videos are more powerful than any other communication mechanism in e-commerce. For a person to spend $350 ish on a technology for which he previously had no interest is a big deal. (This friend is not an impulse purchase buyer, normally.)

  • I just stumbled on here while surfing and had to leave a message to thank you about your reference to swaptree. I just bought a kindle (two days ago) after I got tired of selling my used books on Amazon. I never seemed to have enough space for my books and hate loaning my books out and never seeing them again. The Kindle will solve my space problem and swaptree will solve my loaning problem. Trading my books instead of loaning them out or selling them make so much more sense. Thanks again!

  • I love swaptree.com. Great service for trading books…and cd’s, dvds and video games.

Thanks for the comment. Come back again soon.
