Ice Out Declared On Lake Winnipesaukee
It is Spring!
“Ice Out” has officially been called for Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.
The official call on this comes from a tradition of flying over the lake and determining if the M/S Mt Washington cruise ship can travel safely between her ports in Center Harbor, Weirs Beach, Alton Bay, Wolfeboro and Meredith. Aviator Dave Emerson, the official ice watcher, declared “Ice Out” on Easter Sunday at noon.
“Ice Out” has come as early as March 28 — in 1921 — and as late as May 12 — in 1888. Last year, “Ice Out” was declared on April 23. Considering how much snow we had in the Lakes Region this year the “Ice Out” was relatively early.
Welcome Spring…we are hoping for an elongated Spring and Summer seasons!
