iPhone + Kindle: Uniting Two Stars Today

Amazon has launched the Kindle application on the iPhone (and iTouch) today.  I know this for sure as I already downloaded it first thing this morning.  What a great way to start the day!

All 240,000-plus titles are available on the smaller devices which is nice.  What I think is really great though is that Amazon has launched Whispersync which allows you to share books between your Kindle, iPhone or other SmartPhones as they become available.   Whispersync is a major step in liberating a Kindle book or publication from the proprietary Kindle device.

First thing this morning I went to the iPhone App Store and searched for Kindle.  I immediately downloaded it and was prompted for my Amazon account details.  Voila, I then had access to the dozens of books in my Kindle archive. I quickly retrieved the book I am currently reading, Last Lion:  The Rise and Fall of Ted Kennedy, by Peter Canellos, from the archive and it opened where I left it. The text is clear but you can’t use multi-touch to zoom as you can on other iPhone apps.

I believe the Kindle is a superior device for reading, however, the portability of my book for continued reading on demand whenever I want…at a break…in a cab…is just great.

This truly unites two of my favorite tech inventions the iPhone and Kindle.   We will have to track reaction to this big news on KindleBoards.Com throughout the day.
