Apple iPhone More Than Game Now
Back in December ‘08 I posted on JeffBennett.Org that the Apple iPhone could emerge as a legitimate gaming platform in direct competition with Nintendo DS and Sony Playstation. I believed it but not sure all of you who read this blog did. Check out some new stats that support the Apple iPhone becoming a legitimate gaming platform.
Apple has sold more than 17 million iPhones worldwide and growing. The user base runs the gamut from tech-savvy teens to business executives, which means a greater interest in a wider variety of games. iPhone users have a big appetite for applications as evidenced in the more than 800 million applications the user base has downloaded since the launch of the iPhone App Store just eight months ago.
Apple is also making it very easy and inexpensive for developers to quickly create games and get it out on the Apple App Store. Traditional gaming companies like Sony and Nintendo have a more structured process that is not as nimble. The selection of games on the Apple App Store is growing daily and they have some cool games available for instant download.
Focus group of two here but in our home we have portfable gaming devices that are Sony PlayStations, a new Nintendo DS and Leapster. On a recent cross country trip our two young game enthusiasts were more interested in using our two iPhones than their other gaming devices. This led my wife to think why did we just buy that new DS? The DS is a great product but I think in our little focus group we are proving out that Apple is more than in the game by capturing the imagination and most importantly the commitment of users.
As posted in December right here, look out Sony and Nintendo…here comes the Apple iPhone!

Looks like IPhone rules the mobile net too at the moment … incredible 66% of the mobile browsing usage according to netmarketshare.com. Been researching new features of the IPhone 3.0 OS – seems big improvements not the least being cut & paste(how did they not have this before!). May just make the switch this yr from trusty Blackberry. I know you were a hard core Blackberry addict JB…do you miss the ole Curve at all…can you still type and steer the boat at the same time with the IPhone touch screen?

I think you are right saying iPhone ruling the mobile web. I got the original iPhone within days of it’s availability. This was a great “iPod and phone” but not a very usable email or mobile web device. The combination of the 3G model, Apple’s adoption of Exchange to enable email and the growing number of applications makes the iPhone hands down the best mobile device right now. I was a hardcore blackberry user…but not anymore. The only beef I have w/ Apple is the battery is not as strong as other devices. Others might complain the typing is not as easy with Blackberry either and I agree. I can drive the boat with the iPhone and track my position on it’s GPS functionality. I am sure Google’s Android will get there as well and others. I love the iPhone though as really is the best.
