The Apple iPhone is moving from just a cool gadget for the technorati to the mainstream.   Comscore has recently come out with a report detailing the demographics of iPhone users, and the results are surprising. The report indicates that the driver behind the iPhones growth comes from users who earn less than the median household income of $50,000.

Why is this? Several factors are driving this phenomena:

1. Apple lowered the price with the launch of the iPhone 3G which has opened up the market entry.

2. Phone buyers in all demographics are looking for more than a phone now. The integration of phone, email, sms, web, camera, ipod, gps/maps, growing list of apps like Facebook, MySpace, etc. allow iPhone users to consolidate usage to one not many devices/access plans.

3. The iPod has been adopted by a wide demographic so consider the iPhone as a highly versatile iPod.

4. Early adopters of the iPhone were indeed the technorati and some have upgraded to the new iPhone 3G but not all so there has been muted growth in this demographic group.

5. The \”Blackberry Crowd” that either tried the iPhone and went back or would not switch due to the lack of email functionality is still on the sidelines. I was part of this group. I loved the iPhone but the Blackberry was a superior device for email and gave me a phone too. This is not the case now the iPhone is on par. Sure typing is not as easy but the speed, access and Exchange integration is all there.

This news on iPhone adoption by a wide demographic is a great sign for Apple as it moves it supports the notion of momentum in building a mass market for this very cool and highly functional technology device.
